Blues Collection "Live At Wilebski's" (MVD)

By: Paul Autry

Okay, here's what I know...this release was filmed at a place called Wilebski's Bar in Minnesota, way back in 1984 during a blues festival and what you've got here, according to the liner notes, are the highlights of this three day festival. Now, I have to admit that I'm in the dark as to what this whole festival was all about and who all performed at it and stuff like that. Obviously, the artists featured on this release were there. This release plays like a compilation video and there's really no order to the performances. I would assume that the artists featured here did more than a song or two at this show. But, that's not to be found here. Anyway, it's all about the blues and the various styles that go into it. Stand out performances, in my opinion, are Willie & The Bees with "Fine Brown Flame," Corky Siegel with "Half Asleep At The Wheel," Dr John's "You Lie Too Much" and John Lee Hooker & Lady Bianca doing "Boogie Woman." But, the best of the bunch is John Lee Hooker doing "Boom Boom," which is one of his trademark tunes. The film is very dark, which gives you the feeling of being right there in the club as these performances were happening. There's also a lot of bonus reading material on here. You get individual artist bios, the story of the blues, a trivia quiz, the all time blues top 50 and the greatest artists of the 20th century. As I said, it's all reading material and this should help to increase your knowledge of the blues a bit. There's a lot more to the blues than what you'll find on this release. But, this collection of performances captures a moment in time that you can enjoy over and over again...and who said you can never go back, huh?
