"Undergrads: The Complete First Season I don't have my television hooked up because I'm more of a movie guy and since you can buy pretty much everything on DVD these days, anything I like about television, well, I can just go out an buy it. Now, if I'm not mistaken, "Undergrads" was an MTV feature. Don't even get me started on that channel because I have nothing good to say about it. Sure, they had "Beavis & Butthead" and "The Osbournes." But, that's about it. I still wouldn't tune in. Rather go out and buy the video/DVD releases. Anyway, since I don't watch MTV or any other channel for that matter, when I sat down to watch this release, I did so knowing nothing about the program. After I got through the first episode, I was hooked. The story behind "Undergrads," for those of you who aren't familiar with it, is four high school friends who are in their freshman year at college. They manage to get through the first year in a matter of 13 episodes, all of which are featured here. Nitz is the main guy. He's the "leader" so to speak. He's not really the leader type. But, he puts a lot of thought into everything he does and when he takes a chance on something, it usually doesn't work out as well as he'd like it to. Rocko is the dumb jock who has an obsession with beer, porn and getting laid...although he doesn't get laid. Tries like hell though. He's not too bright. Quite a character though. Yeah, we all know someone like him. Cal, on the other hand, comes off like a homosexual. But, he's not. In fact, he's constantly getting laid. Women just throw themselves at him. Rocko can't stand him, even though they are kind of friends with each other. He's also way too polite for his own good. Gimpy is the twisted one in the bunch. He's a super computer freak who hardly ever leaves his dorm room. He also has an exceptional obsession with the Star Wars films. In fact, there's a Star Wars reference in every episode. Some are rather obvious, some are rather obscure. It's cool how they work 'em in though. These 13 episodes all flow rather well. Some series have a "not so good" episode every now and then. But, you won't find that here. Each one was as interesting as the next. It's a very solid show. But, there is something worth complaining about, especially if my impression is correct. The way I took it, these 13 episodes are all that were made and, the way I took it, there wouldn't be a second season. Yeah, leave it to MTV to ruin something good. No wonder they suck major ass. Each of these characters grew through the first season and, on the final episode, they gave you an idea what the second season would be like. Stories were set up and you could almost picture what the characters second year in college was gonna bring. But, like I said, the impression I got was that it isn't gonna happen, which is a shame because this series had the potential to have a long and successful run. Maybe MTV will see the error of their ways. I doubt it though. Check this release out anyway because it's well worth viewing and adding to your collection. |
