Tony Joe White"Tony Joe White in Concert" (DVD) Recorded back in 1992 as part of the Ohne Filter concert series in the Black Forest of Germany is Tony Joe White in concert. If you haven't heard of Tony Joe White, you've still probably heard some of his songs. Hailing from Louisiana, this 'swamp-rock' singer, guitarist, and harmonica player penned the mega-hits "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia." In this concert, White effortlessly belts out an eleven-song set with smooth, smoky vocals, and as he alternates between guitar chops and blowing on the harp. And the band changes gear from song to song, varying from songs that are more folksy, to blues, to jazz but all flowing together as if each genre was just naturally connected to one another. Highlights of the show include the soulful and sultry "Ain't Going Down This Time," the slow blues tune, "You're Gonna Look Good In Blues," and the jazzy "Biyo Rhythm" that accentuates White's awesome guitar playing and creates an infectious buzz of excitement for those in the audience, and viewers watching the DVD in the comfort of their own living rooms. And then, of course, White's hit-songs "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia." The picture quality is vividly clear and beautiful and the sound is excellent. The only way this concert could have been better is if it had been longer, but with a playing time of about an hour, it does not by any means leave you dissatisfied. An utter joy to watch, this DVD has made me a fan of White, and will keep me on the alert for other concerts from the Ohne Filter concert series. |
