Hawkwind
"The Chronicle Of The Black Sword"
Visionary

By Paul Autry

Here's a band that has quite a bit of history behind them. I don't know a lot of it, but, that's just me. You can't expect me to know everything now, can you?

Anyway, this DVD features the stage production of "The Chronicle Of The Black Sword," which was based on the "Elric" stories by Michael Moorcock. I guess you have to have read those stories to understand the storyline to this release.

This was recorded in 1985 at London's Hammersmith Odeon and it shows the band doing their thing with various other people on the stage to bring the characters they're singing about to life. While the band has probably never been compared to Pink Floyd, the way this concert video is presented gave me a Pink Floyd sort of vibe in certain places. The best track here is a catchy little tune titled "Needlegun." It's a simple song, but, once you hear it, you won't be able to get it out of your head.

Due to the fact that I never followed the history of this band, I guess you could say that I'm not a fan. But, I did find this release to be an interesting viewing experience and, if i would have went out and bought this, I couldn't say I'd feel shafted. But, to really enjoy this to the max requires two things. One, you have to be a fan of the band, one who is well versed in their history. Two, you have to understand the concept/story behind the "Elric" stories.
