Wesley Willis "The Daddy Of Rock 'N' Roll" (MVD)

By Paul Autry

This release caught my attention. I'm not familiar with Wesley Willis and, as I sat down to watch this, I thought, well, maybe he's another crazy, semi-famous rock star who went belly up on drugs or something like that. So, I'm sitting here watching this with like, no clue. I turned it off and went online to find some information on Wesley so I could have a better understanding of what I was watching. Wesley's a huge black man with schizophrenia and, uh, personal demons and a heart of gold. He also happens to be an artist an a musician. As an artist, at least from what I've seen, he's brilliant. He does some really good work. As a musician, well, I guess it all depends on how you view what he does. He seems to have a fixation on sucking the ass of various animals...in his lyrics, not in real life. Speaking of which, there's a shot of him at the zoo watching an elephant take a dump, which I thought was rather funny. Anyway, his animal sucking lyrics seem to be a way of dealing with his demons, of which he has three. I'm not even gonna begin to try to explain that one. You've gotta watch this release to get the whole story. His way of greeting people, besides asking 'em if they wanna buy a CD, is with a friendly head-butt and getting people to say "RA" and "RAOL," which I assume is his way of saying rock 'n' roll. He's kind of like a soft spoken Mr. T.

This release doesn't actually give you his whole story. That's why you need to get online and look him up. But, if you view this, it does get you interested in what he has to offer. At least it did for me. The main program is entertaining. But, it's the extra features that really make it worth watching, especially the live footage with his band, The Wesley Willis Fiasco. He may consider himself a rock 'n' roll artist. But, I would say his music is closer to punk. He stands on stage reading his lyrics from a notebook while the rest of the band is jumping around. Gotta love it. The bottom line here is the man's a pure artist. Probably as pure as they get. I'm actually interested in hearing some of his CD's and I guess now I'll search a few of 'em out. But, yeah, Wesley Willis is pretty cool and, if you don't believe me, check this release out. It'll get your attention, that's for sure. http://www.musicvideodistributors.com
