This 2003 documentary film on Guns N' Roses is ideal for the hard-core G
N'R fans, and for anyone who needs a "Cliff-Notes" version of the
history of the band...but little anyone else. Unauthorized by the band,
past or present, this dvd comes across as a gossip-column-y
documentation of how the band formed, how the band took off, and then
how they fell apart. Because of the fact that the band had no part in
the making of this film, there isn't any G N' R music at all during the
entire documentary...and that's half the fun! I feel that had they
acquired the permission to include some music, this film would be more
entertaining.
There is some old footage of various band members which would be of
interest to the die-hard fans.
Also, various rock journalists, music promoters, and music store owners
are also interviewed talking about the band; which in my opinion are the
best segments of the dvd.
A great deal of focus is on Axl Rose, who most believe is the main reason
for Guns N' Roses' success, but the stories of his bad-boy antics and
tantrums seem to be more of interest to those voicing the glory days
of the band, than Axl's talent and achievements. The running time of
the documentary is approximately 60 minutes, with a photo gallery, and
band discography as dvd extras. It isn't a bad film, but it will provide
very little entertainment for anyone who isn't a huge Guns N' Roses
fan.
