W.A.S.P.
"The Sting: Live At The Key Club"

By: Paul Autry

Anyone with a hard on for the shock rock circus that is known as W.A.S.P. will totally appreciate this release because, in all honesty, this is about as up close and personal you can get to the band without actually meeting them. I happened to catch one of the very first shows of the "Helldorado" tour and watching this release brings back a lot of alcohol drenched memories. I was pretty close to the stage at that show and, this release, well, I felt like I was even closer to the band. You're close enough to get a good, clear look into the eyes of Blackie Lawless, who reigns over his audience like the crown prince of immoral madness. Okay, sure, I'll be the first to admit that this is not the best representation of a W.A.S.P. stage show. I mean, it's not an endless fuck fest of blood, sex and horror that past shows have been known for...although Blackie does shoot fire from his crotch and he drinks blood from a skull. But, with most of the shock value stuff stripped away, you're left with nothing more than the performance and how well they can actually carry themselves without other "distractions." So, what's the end result? I'll tell you...it's four guys who can step up on that stage and rip you a new asshole in the course of twelve songs. That's what you've got and that's worth the price of admission alone. My only complaint with this release is the audience. Come on, people, this is W.A.S.P. we're talking about here. You'd think the crowd would be going ape shit, screamin' and yelling for more. Maybe they weren't drunk enough, I don't know. But, this release is still worth checking out, especially if you wanna see W.A.S.P. in their purest form.
