Long John Baldry"In Concert" In the mood for something blues? Then this DVD is just the thing! It features a live performance by long-standing bluesman John Baldry, who was a major player in the 60s blues movement in England, once a member of the legendary Blues Incorporated, among others. He has had a long, productive, and influential career, and is still playing today This performance was originally recorded in Germany back in '93, for the German music TV show "Ohne Filter", which was been around for over twenty years now (the DVD includes an interview with the producer of this show). Long John and his band perform on stage, cranking out twelve smoking blues tunes, including classic staples like "Hoochie Koochie Man" and the Willie Dixon penned "Insane Asylum". John sings his heart out, his voice sometimes rough and raw, sometimes smooth and sexy, but always powerful. And speaking of smooth and sexy, John is joined on stage by a sexy lady named Kathi McDonald, who duets with him on a few songs (including the aforementioned "...Asylum"), and on one, "I'd Rather Go Blind", she takes over vocal duties altogether while John takes a break, belting out like her life depends on it, really going nuts! This woman is one fine performer, with a voice that could raise the dead! Why she isn't a star herself is beyond me! Another member of John's band, saxist John Lee Sanders, sings on another song, "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water", and also cranks out a smoking sax solo! He's a great player, as are all the members of John's band. All the songs are blues in their purest form, sung by one of the finest singers in the history of the genre! John and his boys (and girl) do a fantastic job, never hitting a wrong note, and kicking some blues ass all the way! A must for all fans of classic blues! |
