By Paul Autry Cleopatra Records put out a CD box set titled "Goth Box" and this DVD was released to compliment that. Now, I have to admit, this is a style of music that I just can't seem to connect with. In other words, gothic music just doesn't seem to float my boat. Listening to it was one thing. When I had to actually sit and watch it, well, I really wasn't looking forward to having to review this. While "Goth Box" didn't make me a fan of these bands, it did accomplish one thing. I have a better appreciation of the visual aspect of this style of music...for the most part anyway. I have to admit, the best feature on this compilation is the video "Clown" by Switchblade Symphony. The vocalist looks like a psychotic Barbie doll...she's the main focus in this video and, through the various images, the camera seems to love her. I found the Nosferatu song, "The Haunting," to be rather boring. But, the video itself was rather interesting. Shots of the band mixed with old movie footage of, what else, Nosferatu, which gives this song some depth...and a bit of a spooky feel. "Children Of The Light" by a bra-less Eva O. was cool. There's a lot of live performance on here, but, the best of the bunch has to be Christian Death's "Romeo's Distress," just the whole vibe of their stage show is worth watching. Alien Sex Fiend's "Ignore The Machine" was a treat...they seem to be a very visual (and rather strange) band. Plus, their keyboard player is kinda cute, I just hope that, after saying that, she is a female. Sometimes, ya just can't tell. Overall, if your a fan of gothic music, this DVD is something you should add to your collection. The visual aspect of the songs make them more interesting, at least in my opinion. On top of the 15 video's, you also get 12 bonus audio tracks by bands like the ones mentioned above as well as Two Witches, Aurora, I Will I, Die Form and others. This release was made to give you more bang for your buck and that fact alone should make it worth picking up. There's not too many releases out there that go the extra mile for the fans, but, this one obviously did. Even though it's a style of music that I'm not into, I give "Goth Box" two thumbs up for effort and for quality. The label seems to care about the kind of product they put out and it shows! MVD, P.O.
