Hard Vision

The Slog Movie
by Paul Autry

Well, let me be the first to say that this is a release that I don't have to go into great detail about because, once you know what it's all about, you're either gonna check it out or you're gonna have no interest in it. It's as simple as that. The Slog Movie is a piece of musical history. It's a document on the L.A. punk scene featuring some killer performances by T.S.O.L., Circle Jerks, Fear, The Cheifs, Symbol 6, Wasted Youth, Red Cross, Sin 34, Circle One and Henry Rollins. There may be a few others I missed. But, those names should ring a bell for some of you. It's a raw document of what made this music so great. I have to admit to being a little bummed out after watching this release. The people, the scene, there was so much raw energy. It was all about having a good time. It might have been, shall we say, reckless, but, it was all in good fun. I've been to a lot of shows and I've been knee deep in the scene and I just haven't seen anything like this. I guess it's true what they say about not being able to go back home again. In this day and age, people seem to be afraid to be as free as the people on this release. I'm not just talking about the musicians, I'm talking about the fans as well. The whole punk scene was a middle finger to the rest of the world. While many people may feel they still have this attitude, it's not really there. You watch this release and you can feel the vibe coming off it, it's that strong. This is what we need in music today. This is the attitude we need to have once again. Because this is when music actually meant something. Now, it's about making money, looking good, keeping your face on the cover of every so called "important" music magazine, shit like that. - Music today is entertainment. Back then, it was a way of life. You bought records. You didn't download stuff off the internet...and when you bought your music, it wasn't at your local Wal-mart or Tower Records or whatever. You went into a mom and pop store, they knew you, you knew them. It's where all your friends would hang out, talk about what's hot. Each and every one of you reading this review....you need to check out this release and, once you've done that, we need to get this vibe back. You think you know what rock 'n' roll's all about? You don't know shit. Take a look at "The Slog Movie" and you might learn something. Hoist that middle finger up in the air once again and let's get the party started. We've been away for far too long!
