Hard Vision

Athens, GA. - Inside Out (MVD)
by Paul Autry

I did a review on a punk movie like this about a month or two ago and, I've gotta tell you, I really dig this sort of thing. Music has changed so much and you don't see kind of vibe that you see in this film anymore. It was a time when people were being creative and simply enjoying the fact that they were making music. It's true what they say about how you can't go home again. At least you've got something like this where you can take a trip down memory lane and see how it used to be.

This release is a document of the 80's scene in Athens, GA. It features R.E.M., The B-52's, Pylon, Time Toy, Flat Duo Jets, Rev. Howard Finster, Love Tractor, Kilkenny Cats and many more. It takes you back to a time where musicians, poets and artists weren't out trying to compete with each other. Instead, they would, as the back of the DVD package states, co-exist in harmony and share ideals of the land. The way this feature is set up, it looks almost like a home movie. It's got a real street feel to it, which is what something like this should be. Sure, we all love the whole "Behind The Music" thing. But, to me, that seems so, I don't know, scripted, professional, fake. It doesn't bring the people they're talking about down to earth if you know what I mean. It doesn't make you feel like you actually know those people. A release such as this, however, does. It's almost like you're hanging out with these people as they're telling their story and that's just like, really cool. Music, regardless of style, is all about mystery and being larger than life. But, when you strip all that stuff away, the people that you admire are nothing more than human beings themselves, they're just like us...and to capture that side of the whole fame and fortune gig is quite an accomplishment. That's what makes this release special, it captured that other side and it brought the music down to our level. As a fan, that's what you'll appreciate about this film. Watch and learn, people. That's what it's all about!
