Hard Vision

Guitar Heroes / Various Artists In Concert DVD
In Akustik
by Jonathan Mariante

This DVD features live performances from some of the all time great guitar players (and a few small time greats too), all playing blues/rock jams. Featured artists include Curtis Mayfield, Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones bassist) and his band the Rhythm Kings, featuring Albert Lee on guitar and lead throat, Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer (these two do a hard rocking duet with Rick singing and playing guitar and Edgar on keys), Steve Lukather (Toto guitarist) and his band, Los Lobotomys, Walter Trout, Duke Rollibard, Albert Collins, and others. These guitar heroes and their respective backup musicians all do a great job, cranking out some smoking tunes and living up to their titles as "guitar heroes"! The music does the talking here, this is as pure as it comes! No frills, no overdubs, just straight up jamming that sounds great live! There appears to be a fun atmosphere in the air of these performances, and the music just jumps out and grabs you! These guitar heroes really know how to shred! Many of them need no introduction and are already renowned for their talents. Some that stood out for me were, for one, Steve Lukather, who really lets loose on his axe. His talents shine here even more than they did in Toto, probably because as a solo artist, he has more freedom to express himself musically than in a "corporate rock" band. Many people consider Toto a joke, or at least a really lame band, but if they heard Steve play, they'd hear what a brilliant guitarist he really is! Another guy that grabbed me was Popa Chubby, whose contribution is "Stoop Down Baby". I wasn't familiar with him before, but he sure can jam, serving up some sizzling, Southern fried blues! I could go on and on singing the praises of all these guitar men, but take my word for it, they're all great! (That goes without saying in some cases). This is highly recommended to all guitar lovers and blues/classic rock fans. Having the blues was never so much fun!
