By Martha Hughes MH: First off, it’s a pleasure to speak with you. I just received “Hypocrisy”, which is a refreshing surprise. I thought Hypocrisy had called it quits. PT: Yeah, me too. But, the things that were going on in the band and label came out for the better, not the same hassles. Everybody was going to pull the wagon together, not just me. I got tired of doing everything myself. MH: Sometimes you have to lay down the law. PT: Yep. MH: What makes you keep Hypocrisy going? PT: Hey, it’s just a hobby, it’s not a full time job. I’m a fanatic when it comes to writing music. I want it documented on CD. If it wasn’t Hypocrisy, it would be something else. It would be very stupid to throw it away after seven years. Ideas come up and you put them on the shelf until it’s time to record. This recording took one and a half years. MH: I just received the CD this past week, so I’ve only heard a couple of times. Is there a theme to it? PT: No, this is really different kind of stuff for different songs. It would be stupid to do another theme album. MH: I do notice there are several references to Y2K (the year 2000). Do you think the new millenium will cause electronic chaos? PT: I don’t know what the hell is the deal with that. There’s a lot of stories but I don’t know which ones are real. MH: Are you prepareed? PT: Sure I got a six pack. I’m ready to go. MH: Do you see the year 2000 as the beginning of a new era? PT: Not really, I just see it as the same shit everyday. But, as always, because it’s the new year. It doesn’t mean that everybody has to drive on the left side. It’s the same shit. A lot of people are getting too stupid about the millenium. MH: I think this next New Year’s Eve is going to be one to hide at home. PT: Yeah, there’s going to be a lot of chaos, but what’s the big deal? We’re not going to step into the 4th Dimension. MH: Are you a Star Wars fan? PT: Yeah. MH: Are you exciting about the new movie opening? PT: I’m just taking it very cool. I’m just going to see another story. It’s so hyped up the ass. Star Wars was cool, it was a classic movie. MH: Why do you think that the Star Wars series attracts such avid fans? PT: I think it’s well done, from 76-77, the first one, it takes you away from everyday work and nine to five and gets into your fantasy side, and it feels honest, and not overdone and stupid. More or less like a very good story, it stays true to your mind and expands in fantasy. Also, the way they did it was so good, it looked really good. They could have made it last week. It keeps it on the realm of imagination. I think everybody likes the theme of good and evil. MH: Hypocrisy has always been that very rare creature: a death metal band that can write great, slower songs. One of my favorite songs is “Inquire Within.” What do you attribute to this? PT: I think that’s our strongest side. The first two albums we only did fast songs. That was cool for then. Then we slowed it down and a lot of people started picking up on our songs. So it was cool. We only play what we want to hear. Stay true to your heart. When I write, for instance, I’ll just write a song and don’t think about it twice, and if it’s no good, it won’t make the album. And don’t worry if it’s fast or slow, just write what you want. Things around you in your life make you write certain songs. You can call it getting older, or whatever, it’s just shit that gets stuck in your head. MH: Are you happy with your life? PT: Yeah, definitely, very happy. It couldn’t be better. Sometimes I look back and think I had two goals in my life as a kid, becoming a musician, release albums, go on tours, and have my own studio. It’s really cool. It’s very rare that it happens that you get your dreams. I’m not recording Metallica, but I’m recording a lot of bands. Every album we record is the best album we’ve ever done. MH: For the record, you record a lot of better bands than Metallica. If there was something you could change in your life, what would it be? PT: I wasted ten years on my ex-wife. Expect for that, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s trying to find the right people to work with and live with. You always aim for stuff and that’s the most important thing. Never be 100% satisfied. I’m very picky. MH: Were you ever afraid of anything as a kid? Anything scare you? PT: I remember I was scared when I was very young of all the weird people on Star Trek. But, not really. I’ve always been a cocky person. When I was in third grade I beat up people in the 6th grade. MH: Did you ever have nightmares, and can you tell me about one? PT: Not that I can really remember. I was always fascinated by UFO or alien movies. MH: Which science fiction movies do you like? PT: It changes from day to day. “Fire in the Sky” is really good. MH: Do you think alien abductions have happened? PT: I don’t know. A lot of people 100 years ago thought Santa Claus was real. There are really secret weapons, high technology. Maybe the government wants us to think there’s something else there. There could be so many different theories. If you look at the ancient shit, the pyramids, maybe you start to think there is something there. Copyright 1999, BallBuster, The Official Int'l Underground Hard Music Report |
