Well, it ain't bad, but isn't there more than enough "nu metal" in the
world today? These guys are basically a "by the numbers" nu metal band
who don't sound much different from all the other Korns and Bizkits on
the scene today, a scene that is already over-overcrowded, and a style
that will probably soon be considered last month's flavor. These guys
are fairly good musicians, but they don't really offer anything that
really makes them stand out from all the other bands of this ilk. Plus,
all the songs on this album pretty much sound the same. To the band's
credit, however, they do keep it real with a raw, abrasive sound, meaty
guitars, and no frills. There is nothing fancy here, and they do not
try
to dress the music up in any way, like so many other bands do; there
are
no sound effects, rapping, or DJ-ing, just straightforward playing,
with
down-to-the-bone production. They also have some funk influences on
some songs, and singer Justin Brett uses some vocal distortion. One
song, "Fallen" (the album's longest song at six minutes, five seconds),
even reminded me of Korn's "Freak On A Leash". Twelvepointhead are also
a little more aggressive and in-your-face than most of the "big name"
bands of this genre, but hands up, all those who think that might
change
if the band got signed to a major and became successful? This band has
potential but needs to work on themselves a little more, and adopt a
more original approach so they don't get left behind when "nu metal"
goes out of style. This is their first album so I'll give them the
benefit of a doubt.
