The Quill

"Voodoo Caravan"
(SPV)

By Paul Autry

Okay, here's a band that I'm somewhat familiar with. I reviewed their debut release back in 1995 for this publication and while I can't remember what I had to say about it, it must've been good because I still have that album in my collection. I pulled it out and gave it a listen before I sat down to do this review and, yeah, I can see why I didn't let go of this one. There was a second album in 1999, which I haven't heard and now this one. While I missed that album in the middle, one thing I noticed is that the band is a lot stronger than they were back in the day when I first started writing about them, which is something that should be xpected considering the fact that they're still around all these years later. Anyway, there's only one thing that bothers me about this band. Usually, when I read a press release, I can usually agree with everything that's written about a release because I usually see it the same way that it's being promoted. But, in The Quill's press release, I saw the term "stoner rock" being used and, wouldn't you know it, that's not something I really hear. It's funny though because the vocalist has been compared to the late Ray Gillen and I would describe this band as Badlands meets Black Sabbath (both of which are also mentioned in the bio). But, to me, Badlands was more of a blues based rock band and Sabbath was, of course, labeled doom and gloom (but rock all the way) and if that's what you consider stoner rock, well, so be it. To me, it's just a good solid rock 'n' roll album that I would recommend checking out if asked for my opinion. http://welcome.to/thequill
