Summer Dying

I actually saw this band's singer, Kerry Cripe, in action, when
his previous band, Somber, played at the Classic Metal Festival in
June 2001. That band is now defunct, and Kerry is now fronting this
group, Summer Dying, a band who could cause the death of any season!
They storm their way through this seven song album of Slayer influenced
metal (one could call it "retro thrash", for lack of a better term),
which is brutal, heavy, fast, and aggressive, but also has melody and
sophistication. The songs scorch like a flame thrower, with speedy
guitar riffs straight out of the 80's, with some cool solos, and
jackhammer drumming, but they also contain melodic passages and some
more complex arrangements. Kerry himself screams and growls
aggressively, but also sings in a melodic fashion in places. He always
sounds like he is in agony, the song lyrics dealing with the trials and
tribulations of every day life. The band is a tight musical unit that
never lets up! They can certainly play, they've got fire, and could
give many bands on today's underground metal scene a run for their
money! Anyone who misses the days when thrash metal reigned supreme
should enjoy this album.
