Blackshine

"Soulless & Proud"
(SPV)

By Paul Autry

I was reading the bio for Blackshine and it stated that they're out to create a new label in hard music, which they call goth 'n' roll. Considering the fact that I'm not into a lot of the goth music that's out there, one might think that I can't get into this release. Well, suprise, suprise, I actually dig this album. But, as far as goth goes, I really don't hear it in their music. What I do hear is something that sounds more like straightforward heavy rock that's more in the punk vein and there's certain aspects of this disc that sound very raw, in a live sort of way, to me. There's a song on here, "Light The Fuse," that says in the bio is "vaguely reminiscent of Lemmy Kilmister and his band Motorhead." Well, yeah, I can agree with that. But, I agree with it on a much larger scale because the entire disc reminded me of Motorhead. I can also hear a hint of death metal here and there, which should come as no suprise since that's what this band was in a previous life. Okay, so maybe I'm hearing this entire album the wrong way. But, you know what? I like what I hear and I think you will as well. http://www.blackshine.nu
