Sweatpant Boners

"Cruisin' With The Masters"
(Devils Head Records)

By Vinnie Apicella

It was only a matter of time before someone either picked it for a name or an album title… and a place where we've all been before only were too embarrassed to talk about it! "Let's Rock N' Roll," their call to arms, and "Save Your Virginity" opens the set and sounds eerily similar at the opening and overall verse to Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me,"-okay so it's a classic in a long line of rhythm lines-you've heard it over and again in just about any pre-1980 Kiss tune-only never quite like this. Decent folks cover your eyes and ears for this one-my, my we have come a long way since Poison indeed. SB's got an interesting origination point, wrought from Robby Road Steamer's collection of sweatpants and fanny packs and thus the title-though "Fanny Pack" would've been quite funny-the previously designed side-project's taken on a life of its own in the finest S.O.D., Mr. Bungle sort of way. While it's too early to judge now, could well have a similar lasting ability. So here's what you get when you combine the ingredients from the likes of Aftershock, Killswitch Engage, and Unearth-Boston Lager Metal! Compare 'em to a toned down Gangreen type-those of you who remember the Skate Punk/Metal Beer advocate types of the late '80s-with titles like "Banana," "Her Respectable Holes," "Pee With Your Father…" yeah get the picture? Their musical stature is surprisingly steady considering they're going off and again about "Singing Heavy Metal With A Mouth Full Of Cereal" or recreating a memorable Chinese food experience. Fun and games galore with plenty o' mixed medleys, an acoustic Death Metal tune and tongue in cheek humor to lend a welcome back hand to seriousness of all ages!
