Independence
"An Austin Sampler"
(2002 Austin Music Community)

By Wayne Klinger

Yup, you guessed it! A music sampler of Austin, Texas bands but these ones testify to their own of the DIY and staying away from any corporate labels and having artistical freedom. 19 tracks and artists ranging from Punk to Hardcore, Metal,Rock, Stoner Rock and mainstream. My only standouts out of the whole compilation were Pong, The Spiders, Electric Cock, USS Friendship, Brown Whornet, Migas Squat Thrust and Creeperweed. It's a decent comp but not enough bands to wet my willy as far as original material. Despite one critic saying this is the "music capital of the world", I only disagree that it's not the "one and only" since we have many coming out of Chicago, Detroit, Tampa, San Francisco and LA as far as major cities are concerned. I do respect releases like this for the simple "artistic freedom" as mentioned earlier since alot of corporate labels try to change bands from what they wan to play from the heart if it doesn't suit today's trends.
