Brand New Sin
"Brand New Sin "
(Now Or Never Records)

By Vinnie Apicella

"This record will make you want to play air guitar in front of the mirror again," reads the opening statement for Brand New Sin's brand new self-titled record. Okay, now that's something to get excited about. I take that to mean we've got some Eddie Van Halen like histrionics going on here, of course, and damn straight I'm ready to get the fingers flying… However we must remember in spite of Rock's cyclical nature and where actual instrumentation is coming back into vogue, there is a gradual process involved where even now, when three minute, three string chord abominations of angst slow the step, anything above that's enough to stand and take notice. Here's the comparison, which we'll get out of the way first-C.O.C. and Soil with dulled-Down Alselmo groveling and groaning. All the parts are in place, however, for all their cracked up to be-solid, soiled, heavy-footed Hard Rock fury that ya can crank up to full volume and hope to hell it don't blow your rear speakers. "Broken Soul," "My World," and particularly the gate crashing "Desperate Times Desperate Means," a desperate song that comes across as much-quicker, angrier and more menacing than much of the slow burn we're getting overall, fire the opening salvo that these guys mean business. I hate the term "Sludge" Rock and all it concerns; This isn't Crowbar, but there are those needle burying low-lying elements very much involved, yet cross-fixed in melodic verses and hair-raising call outs for that extra mass of menace… 'cept on the obligatory "Missin You," ballad-and what would a return to Rock & Roll prominence be without one. Otherwise it's all about the riffing-check out "Judgement Day," and "Changes," for some seriously out of the blue razor work-and they come up with some good ones, tight and simple, bluesy and magnified times three! Nice work from a band that aspires to be nothing more than they are, doesn't follow rules and like the guy who wants for nothing, still ends up successful in the end. The signs are there, people are ready to take back their Rock and here's one new one that's ready to deliver!
