Penance
"Alpha & Omega"
(2001 Martyr Music Group)

By Wayne Klinger

This is a long-running notable band with a very pronouced style of Doom/Stoner Rock. For over 10 years this band has fought numerous line-up and label changes to keep things going. The band currently consists of founding member, Mike Smail on drums and a well known underground entity with the debut of Cathedral's "Forest of Equilibrium". The press sheet failed to mention his "claim to fame" before then with the tune of Dream Death; that was pretty much my starting point in the underground with writing and gathering bands. A little less than 2 years ago, Penance acquired ex-Wickerman guitarist, Matt Tuite and ex-Derketa/Mythic, November's Doom and Em Sinfonia bassist, Mary Bielich--more fond memories for me with the vinyl 7" days! Penance remains true with the sludgy to mid-paced Doom with some psychedelia and do remind me of bands like Inner Void, Count Raven and Pentagram. A 9-track treat with an included 3 songs from their self-released EP from 2000, "Turn For The Worse". If you like it doomy, groovy and bottomed out heavy, Penance is good for your sins. www.martyrmusicgroup.com www.penancemusic.com
