Paul Autry I'm not really sure what to make of this band. The CD I have features four
songs and has a running time of fourteen minutes. Track one, "Everywhere I
Look, I See Red," comes off sounding like music of the 60's or the 70's. As
soon as I heard this tune, that song "White Rabbit" came to mind. Maybe I
shouldn't write reviews at three in the morning, but, that's what I heard.
"Testosterone" kicks in next and it's a raw, rocking little tune. "Cavity
Search" sounds like a country rock song and "New Continental" ends the disc
on a rock 'n' roll note. In all honesty, Nila Phoenix reminds me of long time
Philidelphia band, The Session. Maybe because they also have a female
singer...I don't know. I hear what I hear. Now, there's potential here.
But, the production on this album does not do the band justice. It's got a
very raw sound and, in this case, I really don't think that's helping any.
Second, since I'm not really sure what to label this band because of the
various styles of music they put forth...well, other people might tend to see
that as a lack of focus. It's an interesting release, but, I would assume
it's also their first release. As far as I'm concerned, I wanna wait until I
hear more from this band, see what improvements they make, where they go from
here (and so on and so forth) before I make any permanent judgement on
them. E-mail: nilaphoenix@hotmail.com
