Hollywood Hairspray

"Vol. IV"
(Perris Records)
by James Wright

For anyone myself included that rocks out to bands like Motely Crue, Twisted Sister and Poison like it was '89 all over again, Hollywood Hairspray is just what the doctor ordered. This 14 -song collection of hair bands is a throwback to the days when the term rock 'n' roll still had relevance. Former Shotgun Messiah frontman Zinny Zan kicks things off with a Ratt like guitar attack on "Go, Go, Go", while On Parole's "Barflies" forges ahead into modern rock territory. While this is a decent collection of songs, some artists, like The New Romantics, can't get a good production even in today's digital age and their contribution is ruined by a muffled mix. Hollywood Hairspray acts as a great sampler for anyone looking for music devoid of trends and gimmicks that just plain rock. Unfortunately in the long run, this CD only wets your appetite for more of the artists that turned in good solid tracks.
