Lowbrow
"Victim at Play"

It's not hard to imagine what would happen with musicians known for being over the top. Take ex-Nasty Savage members who played on stages where tvs were smashed, who have a punk band on the side and have recorded with El Duce; take a walk on the edge guitarist who has played with some of the biggest death metal bands around; throw in a roadie obsessed with metal and you have Lowbrow, a most untypical death metal band.

Lowbrow began as the brainchild of singer Rich Hornberger. A stint as a roadie for a big time death metal band only confirmed the fact this was what he must do with his life. Living in Tampa, Florida, Rich had become aware of Allen's departure from Six Feet Under. Rich approached him with the idea of starting a new band from scratch. At the ame time, Rich was trying to think of other talented musicians that would compliment Allen's trademark sound.

Ben Meyer and Curt Beeson made a name for themselves as members of Nasty Savage, the first true metal band from Florida. Nasty Savage pushed the boundaries of mid-eighties thrash and, as a result, have been a major influence on members of today's metal bands. Ben & Curt were in between bands at the time and were two musicians that would fit nicely into the mix. Scott Carino was an old friend of Rich's and had played with Curt in Fester, a Bay Area band in the early 90's. After Fester's demise, Scott toured and did some recording with Death. Scott also could contribute a unique quality to Lowbrow.

Rich went back to Allen with the proposed lineup. As a result of hearing the combination of Ben and Allen's guitar work with Curt's monstrous beats, Lowbrow was born. Over the next five months, Lowbrow gelled as a unit and recorded a nine song demo. Lowbrow continued to perform in the Tampa area and included a stint as the opening act for Slayer.

Impressed with Lowbrow's demo, Crook'd Records signed the band in February 1999. Lowbrow entered Morrisound Studios in March. Lowbrow enlisted the help of Donald Tardy, Obituary drummer, as producer and added the engineering and mastering talents of Mark Prator, studio drummer for Iced Earth and Demons and Wizards, to help cultivate their brutal sound. Finished on April 20th, 1999, the day of the Columbine school shooting, the CD was to be titled "Victims At Play."

Lowbrow continued to play regional shows while biding their time waiting for all of the details to be ironed out with the business end of the deal. In August of 1999, Lowbrow faced the departure of Scott due to responsibilities to his family. With shows in the near future, Lowbrow had some friends step up and fill in on bass. One of these was Richard Bateman, who had been in Nasty Savage with Ben and Curt and plays in their side punk band Gardy Loo. The show with Richard seemed to bring out something in both the band and the audience. The decision was made and Richard was asked to join permanently.
