Hailing from the darkest depths of Oulu, Finland comes a new generation of dark wave. Kneel down in homage. The Black League cometh! The Black League was founded by the enigmatic mind of former Sentenced vocalist/bassist Taneli Jarva in 1997. With a seemingly overpowering vision of the new sound he so desired to create, Jarva summoned the expertise of former band mate (from their days in Impaled Nazarene) Sir Luttinen. The Black League was on its way to becoming a reality. The band evolved in a mere year. They practiced as a two piece with Sir Luttinen on drums and Jarva taking care of all remaining parts. The basic framework and distinct sound of The Black League had been established. By the summer of 1998, two new members were added to The Black League line up. Maike Valanne, a familiar figure from the late 80's/early 90's cult band Faff-Bey, accepted the bands guitar slot while all bass duties were delegated to Mr. Florida who, in addition to his own projects, has worked as a session musician in both Legenda and Impaled Nazarene. During the winter of that same year, a multitalented guitar virtuoso by the name of Alex Ranta crossed paths with the band and was immediately asked to join, bringing with him fresh blood to moisten their already exotic flavor of sound. A deal with Spinefarm Records was quickly secured and the band finally entered the studio in December, 1999. "Ichor" (meaning: blood of the gods) is a 13 song soundtrack from the tragic comdey of human existance in our modern universe. Filled with aggressive grooves and etheral dream sequences delivered with the uncompromising attitude of crushing the conventions and cliches of the mainstream, The Black League fall nothing short of brilliant. The song writing process for "Ichor" has been exceptionally long (1992-1999) and hence, the album is the result of Darwinian natural selection; only the strongest tunes survived. Nihilo-cynical realism, ideographic psychodrama, artistic angst with a bitter scent of escapism and eschatology set the stage for a musical journey through an unearthly wonderworld. An end of time release for a brave new era. |
