Somnus
"Awakening The Crown"
Root Of All Evil Records
Somnus

Somnus' debut CD, "Awakening The Crown," intertwines atmospheric black metal with haunting doom for an enrapturing aural experience. Each song conjures extreme darkness and desolate imagery while capturing the dynamics of a cataclysmic orchestra. Inspired by paganism, mythology and polytheistic cultures, Somnus' majestic harmonies, manic drumming & eerily haunting vocals take the listener on an etherial quest...for in your dreams the somber sounds now rest.

Somnus was formed in 1995 by Scott Hilberg (vocals, guitar, formerly of Odious Sanction), Erik Rueschman (guitars) and Lou Spencer (bass). Rhiannon (keyboard/vocals) and Scott Shetler (percussion) joined in early 1996, thus completing the empire of Somnus. The band started playing shows like Cleveland's World Series Of Metal and the Michigan International Deathfest and recorded their demo, "To Return The Crimson Skies." Chris Stolle (ex-Thanatopsis) replaced Shetler in 1997 and the band recorded a 2 song promo cassette as well as "Seasons In The Abyss" for the Dwell Slayer tribute "Gateway To Hell." Erik departed the band after "Awakening The Crown" was recorded and Dave Ingram (lead guitar, formally of Blood Coven) now completes the lineup. Somnus played in such cities as Pittsburg, Columbus, Toledo, Detroit and Chicago and performed at the 1998 and 1999 Milwaukee Metalfests, the first annual March Metal Meltdown in 1999. The band is also playing both Metalmania events this year.
