This is the second album of the embient and orchestral metal band Ewigkeit (a.k.a. J. Fogarty). While its predecessor, "Battle Forces" centered mainly on a retrospective view lyrically, "Starscape" is almost wholly dedicated to a more soul-fulfilling bid to ascend into the realms of unknown space and beyond. The music still holds the mid-paced Black Metal-ish feel, and of course is largely keyboard driven with vocal/guitar/drum accompaniment as this is Ewigkeit's winning trademark. The lyrics go far deeper into the subject matter than on "Battle Furies" and on the whole the vocals are delivered more harshly. "Starscape" is far more experimental than its predecessors (on tracks such as "Deviant" or "Birth Of Horus" for instance). The main improvement is that the keyboards have become far more evolved and involved, also being of a more spacey nature. Recording, engineering and production have all been at Skyline Studios, being produced bt the 'Droid.' Unlike many of the 'name' bands, Ewigkeit has not opted to let musical standards slip in order to have faster and more incoherent strong structures. That seems to be the trend these days (apart from calling everyone else trendy, of course!) No, Ewigkeit have definitely progressed in a continuingly regressing scene. All in all, "Starscape" attempts to be one of the finest examples of fresh and invigorating music in today's underground metal scene. |
